It’s always good news when we hear about veteran designers who are doing their part in raising awareness for the need of sustainability in Indian fashion and Madhu Jain is someone who is not only raising awareness, but she is also a conservationist in the field of heritage textiles. Jain has been in the industry for about three decades and has survived the throws of the volatile fashion industry. By focusing on handlooms and working with artisans whose craft is exquisite, Jain is constantly innovating when it comes to the weaving process. The best part about Jain’s clothing is that her team handcrafts every textile that is then used to create wearable pieces. She is very much seen as one of the pioneers in eco-fashion and is happy to see that many other designers have started following this trend.

Previously, Jain has worked on projects in the mid-nineties with BRAC, Bangaldesh, which is the largest non-profit in the world. She worked on helping them restore indigenous weaving forms such as Naksha Kantha embroidery and reviving the use of fabrics like Dhaka muslin.

Jain’s latest collection utilizes bamboo-silk ikat, a textile that has been 15 years in the making for Jain. This innovation was essentially created by weaving bamboo with yarns from cotton, khadi, chanderi, and wool. Ikat is the process of resist-dyeing print onto the textile which takes very precise skill and craft to create. This ancient weaving technique has long been an inspiration for Jain and her new collection features flowing silhouettes that celebrate movement. This collection is set to launch in Delhi soon and at SFD, we can’t wait to get our hands on Jain’s new innovation.
