Indian-Japanese Sustainable Fashion Line Raag Is Being Relaunched in India!

Raag was the brainchild of Asha Sarabhai, an expert in Gujarati textiles. Under her own label, Asha, she was launched by world-renowned Japanese designer Issey Miyake back in 1984. Back then, sustainable fashion wasn’t really on anybody’s mind, but Asha Sarabhai always respected the integrity of a classic handloom and the time, effort, and precision it takes to create something special.

Raag was a line that utilized Indian textiles and gave them a Japanese twist with the shapes and cuts. The latest collection, which is called Malevich and is inspired by the Russian artist, was launched by Sarabhai’s nephew Ajay Mayor under his online store called Beej. The collection is clad with geometric shapes and clean-cut lines. Handlooms are of course still the focus and Mayor has done his best to keep the collection honest. The Kora collection is all made with unbleached and undyed fabrics that are non-toxic and the natural fabric is comfortable and gentle. Sarabhai always turned to handlooms because of their durability and Mayor wanted to stick to that principle while rethinking the collection for today. “Handloom fabrics, given their feel, breathability and how they age over time are delightful to wear and have a lot of character. Because of these reasons many people have a strong preference for them. “Handloom fabrics, given their feel, breathability and how they age over time are delightful to wear and have a lot of character. Because of these reasons many people have a strong preference for them,” says Mayor in an interview with India Express.

Seams For Dreams is always thrilled to hear of new lines, but even more excited when a great, sustainable idea is revived! Before fast fashion was a thing, designers were only designing one of a kind pieces made by real people and artisans. We can’t wait to see what’s in store at Beej!
