New Year Resolutions for a More Sustainable Style in 2017

2016 has been great for some and for the planet, it has been a year of awakenings with the release of films like Leonardo Dicaprio’s “Before the Flood” which we featured here on the SFD Awareness Blog last year. One of the other main observations for the past year are also the number of designers and shops that have started to get on the sustainable fashion revolution which is a good highlight.

This 2017, there are numerous ways and habits that you can adopt to not only make a difference and reduce the carbon footprint of your fashionable outfits but also create yourself a stylish wardrobe. Here are 5 ideas that SFD are glad to share to all to start a sustainable and fashionably ethical 2017!

New Year Resolution One: Buy more vintage and second hand

Since SFD started in 2015, one of the main points that we have always promoted is to buy more second hand clothing from vintage shops around India or online. Now, there are a lot of boutiques that have a great collection of vintage finds in India and buying from them would help in lessening the number of textiles and fabrics that just go into rubbish from all the fast fashion purchases from big fashion brands. The 4TH Garage Sale of SFD which is coming soon is another great avenue to buy great vintage clothing and second-hand clothing where you save on cash and at the same time help the environment and people in need in India. Now that’s 3 good reasons to buy vintage and visit the upcoming 4th Garage Sale of SFD soon this year.

New Year Resolution Two: Purchase less, Save More

Deciding whether to buy less and living more is an easy task that can make your life lighter and brighter in 2017. Look around your existing closet and see tons of shirts, tops, dresses that haven’t been worn ever since you bought them and make it a point to wear them next time and read up on cool trends and ideas from fashion magazines such as Vogue India and here on our website to know how to rock an outfit and pair all the pieces that you already have in your wardrobe. Best point in buying less = earning and saving more.

New Year Resolution Three: Switch to organic fabrics

Fabrics that have been grown organically are better for the environment than the textiles made with synthetic dyes that are harmful to health and the planet. Before, clothes made with organic cotton and fabrics were more expensive and now, thanks to the active participation of organizations and local governments worldwide, organic cotton is more affordable and is now used by many brands supporting the sustainable fashion revolution. Try switching to clothes made from organic fabrics and give a part of your support in helping the environment.

New Year Resolution Four: Refrain from dry-cleaning your clothes

After stylish dinners and important occasions, it has been a habit to some to go to the nearest dry cleaner and have worn dresses, gowns and suits dry-cleaned. Not only is it more expensive than traditional cleaning manually but dry-cleaning uses harmful chemicals and solvent that are classed
as
hazardous and likely to cause cancer. There are eco-friendly options in getting your best gowns and suits cleaned, like taking time to clean them then air-drying them, then ironing them into a perfect outfit that can be worn again.

New Year Resolution Five: Upcycle and recycle your unwanted clothes

There are many ways for recycling unwanted clothes. From giving them to one of your family members or friends who are likely to wear them more, or donating them to Seams for Dreams for that feel-good factor, or selling them online for some extra cash or upcycling them into an amazing unique and individual piece as what SFD has always been promoting ever since. You will also benefit from the extra wardrobe space that you gain from recycling and upcycling your unwanted clothes.

Seams for Dreams wishes you all the luck in keeping the good sustainable habits this 2017 and cheers to an eco-friendlier you for the benefit of all and our planet this year!
