Jumped on the bandwagon of decluttering your home, including your closet, and now you don’t know what to do with that old dress you wore for graduation or the sweater that simply doesn’t fit anymore? The only thing you know is that – as the responsible person you are – simply throwing them away won’t be an option, therefore you want to find responsible ways to get rid of them? Well then: congratulations, since you’ve just stumbled across exactly that: A list of not 9 ways on how to get rid of old clothing responsibly. Ready? Perfect. Here we so:
- Give them to a sibling/cousin/friend.
Don’t we all have that one person in our family we wish they would declutter their closet more often and give some of these pieces to us? So who knows, maybe to some of your friends/family you are that person and they would feel like Christmas when you hand them over a bag of the clothes you sorted out… Why not giving it a try?
- Hold a clothing swap.
In times of COVID this could be held via Zoom and look like that: With your friends, you agree on a specific day when all of you guys declutter your closets and in the evening you schedule a call. Along with some snacks, each of you presents what they have to swap. And who knows, maybe this even turns into a small fashion show! If that doesn’t call for a fun girls night…!!
- Sell them.
There are platforms where you can easily sell unwanted clothes, such as eBay or local thrift stores you can bring them to. This way you even make a little money out of clothes that would otherwise collect dust, yet in times of lockdown, you have to inform yourself about the platform’s hygiene regulations which you need to stick to.
- Alter them.
If the above steps won’t work out, why not experiment around a little with them? There are plenty of tutorials out there teaching you how to bring your clothes back to life, by for instance turning an old shirt into a beautiful skirt. We personally love to check Pinterest for that occasion typing “Upcycle clothes” in the search bar. You will be astonished by the number of inspirational posts there are to be found, trust us!
- Turn them into rags.
This works especially well with soft, cotton shirts. Cut them up and turn them into reusable rags you can clean your house with. To us again this also is also rather a last resort kind tip, if the other ones won’t work out.
- Donate them.
And last but not least you can of course donate your unwanted clothes to a charity, such as ours. Yet this should involve some research, as not all charities are the same and you want to make sure your clothes will really reach those in need and not be used for other purposes. As far as we can tell for SFD, we help you to get rid of all the extra clutter in your closets by taking everything from your jeans and t-shirts to your high-end couture, and by donating, you’re providing layers of love and warmth to those who truly need the comfort of having second hands.
